Interview with THE SFATICHINIs

Let’s get to know the Sfatichinis, Dr. Krampy’s helpers!

“Hi Paul, hi Bernie, it’s such a pleasure to have you here! Please introduce yourselves to the magazine’s readers — who are you and what is your role in the Kingdom of Santa Claus?”

Bernie (smiling): Hi there! I’m Bernie, the always-smiling Sfatichini! We work at the coal factory for Dr. Krampy, moving mountains of coal day and night. It’s tough work, but we do it while singing and without wasting a minute! Right, Paul?
Paul (grumbling): Yeah, work and more work… with never a day off. We produce coal for the naughty, mischievous kids, and even the special mix that the Befana uses! I have no idea how Bernie stays so happy all the time… anyway, I’m Paul.

“Thanks also to Dr. Krampy for surprisingly letting you have time for this interview! Do you remember how you first arrived in the Kingdom?”

Bernie (smiling): Oh, this is such a great story! It all started thanks to Lucy the Star and Steve the Candy Cane. They realized Dr. Krampy was always so stressed, working alone down in the coal mine. They decided to surprise him by creating a bag of magical coal-flavored popcorn! Bon Bon, the pastry elf, helped prepare it with a sprinkle of magic, laughter, and Christmas songs. When Krampy opened the bag… Boom! We jumped right out! It was one of the funniest days ever!

Paul (sighing): Yeah, and from that moment on we were thrown into working at the coal mine. Not exactly the kind of “magic” I was hoping for… but hey, we’re here, still alive, and I guess that’s something… right?

“What was your first meeting with Dr. Krampy like?”

Bernie (enthusiastic): Oh, it was hilarious! Krampy didn’t see it coming. He opened the bag, and we popped out like crazy popcorn! He didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. In the end, he kept us around, accepting the fact that he needed a bit of help, even if he’ll never admit it.
Paul (serious): Well, “accepting” is a big word. Let’s say he tolerated us… with a generous dose of his grumpiness.

“Do you like working in the coal mine?”

Bernie (smiling): Let’s say we do our best! It’s fun to move the coal while singing our song, especially when the workday ends.

Paul (patiently): Working in the mine is not exactly a walk in the park. But we try to keep it lighter, even though Krampy isn’t the most cheerful boss… After all, we’re here to help him. Every once in a while, when he’s in a good mood, he even comes to sing our song with us!

“You keep mentioning this song — would you sing it for me?”

Paul (resigned): Bernie, please, not now…

Bernie (super enthusiastic): Yesssssss!!! After all, even Sfatichinis have a rock soul… our song is called “Hey Ho! Sfatichinis” and I’m going to sing it alllllllll for you right now!

“Speaking of Santalloween!! That was such an incredible story… how did you experience it?”

Bernie (still enthusiastic): Santalloween was… incredible! When the Kingdom transformed, the coal factory was filled with pumpkins and spooky sweets. It felt like living in a dream! We couldn’t stop singing and dancing with all the new decorations. And seeing Dr. Krampy looking… happy and playful!
Paul (serious): Playful? Maybe for you. For me, it was a nightmare. Pumpkins everywhere, coal disappearing under the decorations… I lost count of how many times I had to clean up the factory.

“But you must have learned something from that Santalloween…”

Bernie (thinking): Well, we learned that even the strangest wishes can come true. When Lucy accidentally granted Krampy’s wish, the entire Kingdom was transformed… they even wrote a book about it! But in the end, we realized that the magic of Christmas is stronger than anything else. And, well, now we know never to underestimate the power of a wish!

Paul (with a half-smile): Yeah, the lesson was clear: be careful what you wish for… especially if you’re close to Lucy and her powers!

“What do you like to do when you’re not working in the coal factory?”

Bernie (dreamily): Play with Potty, Krampy’s cat! One time he started tickling me, and I turned completely white like snow. It was so funnyyyyyy… I didn’t even feel like a Sfatichini anymore!

Paul (serious): I prefer a bit of rest… you know, working all day hauling coal is tiring!

“What is your relationship with the other residents of the Kingdom?”

Bernie (smiling): We have great relationships with everyone! Steve the Candy Cane always makes us laugh with his jokes, and Bon Bon brings us amazing treats!!! He makes wonderful cookies called Sfaticookies, named after us because they’re our absolute favorite! Even Lucy comes to visit us in the mine sometimes to shine her light… I love her so much! She always joins us to sing our song… she has a bit of a rock soul too!
Paul (nodding): Yeah, the others are nice. But I try to stay away from Steve — he always wants me in the middle of his pranks… and then there’s Lampo, he’s convinced I should start running!!! Are they crazy?!

“What is your biggest wish?”

Bernie (thinking): I dream of the day when Krampy will look at us and say, “Good job, guys, take a day off!” And maybe spend the day at Bon Bon’s pastry shop… eating sweets together with all our friends from the Kingdom!
Paul (thoughtful): My wish? Hmm…

No need for drama, I’ll take it slow... if you’re like me, you’re a real Sfatikeenee, you know!
